TO negate the US Supreme Court ruling to put carbon dioxide emissions beyond the regulatory authority of the Environmental Protection Agency, Congressional democrats have introduced the Clean Shipping Act that would ban ships from US ports that did not meet the zero-CO2 standard.
Congressman Alan Lowenthal (California), along with Congresswoman Nanette Barragan (California) have introduced a stand-alone bill to zero out CO2 emissions from all ocean shipping companies that do business with the United States.
‘We no longer have the luxury of waiting to act,’ Mr Lowenthal said. ‘We must face the fact that we are at a tipping point in the climate crisis; we must move beyond fossil fuels, and that includes air, land and sea transportation sources. No emissions sources can be overlooked.’
Said Congresswoman Barragan: ‘The Clean Shipping Act of 2022 is a bold legislation that will make the United States a global climate leader in addressing pollution from the shipping industry and protect the health of port communities in Los Angeles and around the country.’
