The largest cargo vessel from Dhidhdhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll, ran aground on Sunday evening while carrying passengers and goods worth over a million Rufiyaa.
According to the Maldives Police Service, the vessel was travelling from Malé to Haa Alifu Atoll when it ran aground near the uninhabited island of Vavathi in Noonu Atoll at around 11:25 p.m. According to the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), there were 61 people on board, including women and children. MNDF and Police are currently working at the scene.
Mega Hoara, stretching 98 feet, is celebrated as the pride of Dhidhdhoo and the largest cargo ship in the atoll. Built over seven years, it began operations in September last year. Alongside passengers, it was also transporting a large shipment of goods from Malé at the time of the incident.
