DHL Express has finalized its contract with SmartLynx Airlines to provide air transport services for its European parcel network, according to the Riga, Latvia-based carrier.
An aircraft database shows SmartLynx in early February placed five aircraft into storage. A conservative assumption that the aircraft lease for around $225,000 per month suggests the idle aircraft will cost the airline over $1 million per month.
SmartLynx Airlines is a provider of subcontracted capacity for commercial airlines and other clients. The company provides the aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance, and the clients are responsible for filling its planes with cargo or passengers.
“We can confirm that as of February 1st, we have concluded our cooperation with European Air Transport Leipzig,” said Smartlynx in a statement to FreightWaves. “SmartLynx Airlines is reevaluating its fleet composition and assessing potential changes.”
