Damen Marine Components (DMC) was contracted to supply rudders, steering gear and nozzles to two major newbuild projects in India. The contracts cover a total of 14 multi-purpose vessels (MPV) and are being built at two shipyards, Udupi Cochin Shipyard and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders.
The first project consists of eight 6,300 DWT MPVs that UCSL is developing for a Scandinavian client. These vessels represent the first order placed with DMC by this shipyard, which is part of Cochin Shipyard Ltd.
The Dutch company will supply its piston steering gear and Atlantic-type rudders for these vessels, which will be adapted to the specific design of this ship. All equipment will be built and delivered from DMC’s factory in China, DMC Jiangyin.
DMC Sales Manager, Bogdan Mocanu, stated that “We have been working in India for 20 years and expanding our presence with this project for Udupi Cochin Shipyard fills us with pride. It demonstrates our ability to work all over the world, adapting our own design equipment to the customer’s needs. It is rewarding to see that our mutual relationship with Udupi is smooth; there is good communication and collaboration between everyone.”
The second project consists of six ships for the Danish shipowner Navi Merchants, built at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Bombay, a project that marks an unprecedented collaboration.
The scope of DMC includes rudder systems (Atlantic type) and hydraulic steering gear (piston type), propeller nozzles for efficient propulsion.
While the steering gear will be manufactured directly from DMC’s headquarters and production center in the Netherlands, the rudders and nozzles will be developed at DMC Gdansk, Poland.
“We are proud to participate in these newbuilds and grateful for the trust placed in Navi Merchants. The same goes for our first client, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. This high-tech shipyard is recognized for its warships. Therefore, when building commercial vessels, one thing is certain, that this will be a demanding project with the highest standards. Personally, I consider this contract a milestone for DMC in the Indian maritime market,” added Bogdan.
All components will be manufactured to comply with the latest class standards and their phased delivery is scheduled for the end of this year.
