DP World has begun construction of a new container terminal, a vertical quay and a silo for storing cereals in the Port of Novi Sad, Serbia.

Part of the continued €30m (US$31.6m) investment DP World has committed to its Novi Sad terminal, the new container terminal will support the Serbian agricultural industry to have increased links with other trade centres.

Claudiu Negreanu, general manager of DP World Novi Sad, said: “Transport and logistics have never been more important for the world we live in today.

“At DP World, we constantly strive to improve our transport and logistics solutions by combining old proven methods of transporting goods with technology enhanced approaches to ensure that goods reach different markets and customers quickly, efficiently and sustainability.”

This latest project follows other significant investments designed to change the face and future of the port.

“The development work that began today, along with our previous renovation of the passenger terminal and new cranes and other equipment we have invested in, will create an intermodal terminal on that Danube we believe will benefit not only the Serbian market, but also the region and beyond,” Negreanu added.

With construction expected to be complete in two years, the container terminal will be the first to be built on this part of the Danube and will be critical for the development of logistics and economy in Serbia.

Additionally, the nine silos planed will offer the Port of Novi Sad a storage service that is “of great importance for the development of the agriculture history” according to Tomislav Momirović, minister of construction, transport and infrastructure.

The Port of Novi Sad is one of the most important Danubi ports in Europe and one of the most important in Serbia.

Miloš Vučević, mayor of Novi Sad, said that DP World’s investment will improve capacity and enable easier transport of goods from Novi Sad to all destinations.

“I am glad that in these difficult times, DP World’s business activity continues to be strong,” he added. “Their contributions to Novi Sad – through taxes and investments – will be used to support projects that will benefit the community such as building kindergartens and paving the streets.”
