Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has been chosen to lead a South Korean hydrogen fuel cell tugboat project
The project is funded by South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries with a total development budget of 23.5Bn South Korean won (US$17.3Bn).
The goal is to commercialise a South Korean-built tugboat by 2026 powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, and DSME has developed a hydrogen fuel cell-based battery-hybrid propulsion system of up to 3 MW.
Remote monitoring and remote control technologies have been included in the development work, thorugh collaborations with national research institutes, universities and ship technology companies.
By participating in the project, DSME is contributing to the government’s policy of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050. The company said it expects to be able to capitalise on the experience in the era of carbon-free shipping.
DSME is also participating in a project to actively develop ship technology based on the use of ammonia as a fuel. DSME will lead the development of the ammonia fuel supply system for this project and conduct demonstration work using ships equipped with an ammonia ’co-firing engine’ in the Okpo National Industrial Complex and offshore demonstration zone in Geoje.
Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Research Center head Dong-gyu Choi said, “The company is busy developing technologies for future carbon-neutral ships.”
