US shipbuilder Washburn & Doughty Associates has completed a new ice-hardened tug for Great Lakes St Lawrence Seaway Development Corp (SLSDC) and is close to delivering two for another major towage provider

The Maine-headquartered shipyard has built an azimuth stern drive tug to assist ships into harbours and manoeuvre ice in the Great Lakes and St Lawrence Seaway.

Seaway Trident was constructed to Glosten’s HT-60 design. By mid-June, it was seen at the shipyard after being painted in the SLSDC colours. Washburn & Doughty launched the tug mid-September and it was completed on the quayside. It will undergo sea trials and sail to the Great Lakes Q4 2022.

With this vessel, SLSDC sought to balance versatility and a compact size with an extra degree of toughness for performing ice management duties during the winter months.

Washburn & Doughty is also building two escort tugs for McAllister Towing. The first of these newbuildings, Jane McAllister, is set to be delivered end-2022 or Q1 2023 and will be followed closely by sister tug Grace McAllister.

Once finished, these mighty tractor tug additions will each have 5,050 kW of power and bollard pull of 85 tonnes coming from two Cat 3516E main engines and Schottel SRP 490 Z-drive units.

Earlier this year, Washburn & Doughty built a 312-gt tractor tug for Moran Towing’s operations on the US east coast. Dennis Moran is a sister tug to 2021-built Wyatt Moran and Andrew Moran.

Moran Towing said Dennis Moran is supporting Georgia Ports Authority in berthing, towing and handling large ships in the state’s terminals in Savannah.

It has twin Cat 3512E main engines, complying with US Environmental Protection Agency Tier 4 emissions standards and a combined output of 3,800 kW.
