Eastern Car Liner Co Ltd (ECL) has agreed a deal to install a new fuel optimisation system across its entire fleet, combining Nabtesco Corporation’s Telegraph Agent automatic speed control system with DeepSea Technologies’ AI-driven Cassandra platform.
The full fleet roll-out has been agreed following an initial deployment on the ECL car carrier Malaysia Grace delivered a 3.4% reduction in fuel consumption.
The 3.4% efficiency gain was validated through a structured 10-day test alternating Telegraph Agent operation every three hours, with consistent average speeds recorded but with reduced fluctuations in speed and fuel consumption when the system was active.
“As the first company in Japan to adopt this technology, we sincerely look forward to further collaboration between Cassandra and Telegraph Agent,” said N Murakami, CEO of ECL Ship Management.
“Embracing new approaches is in our company’s blood, and the reduction in emissions this project has brought will be hugely valued by our clients.”
Launched in 2024, Telegraph Agent allows vessel owners to automatically control main engine output to match a target RPM, power or speed. Used alongside Cassandra, the system analyses operational data in real time to optimise speed control, identify fuel-saving opportunities, and enhance fleet-wide operational awareness.
“We’re delighted that our AI-driven approach is taking hold in Japan, where companies are serious about the twin challenge of decarbonisation and crewing,” said DeepSea CEO Dr Konstantinos Kyriakopoulos.
“Cassandra’s AI allows companies to unlock the full potential of Telegraph Agent to identify the ideal setpoints to achieve maximum savings across any given voyage.”
