Eastmed reshapes container fleet with sale of 10-year-old feeder

Thanasis Martinos-led Eastern Mediterranean Maritime (Eastmed) has returned to the container vessel sale and purchase market, offloading a 10-year-old ship

The Greek shipping major has agreed to divest 2015-built, 2,194-TEU vesselHaris, though the buyer’s identity remains undisclosed. Some shipbrokers have linked the ship to a Singapore-based operator.

Greek shipbroking firms have reported a sale price of US$31M forHaris, which was constructed at China’s Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard. The same sources add that the vessel is currently on charter to French liner giant CMA CGM.

This marks the second sale transaction of a 2015-built, Greek-owned feeder vessel since early February. At that time, Riviera reported Cape Shipping had sold Cape Monterey to French liner giant CMA CGM. The vessel has since been renamed CNC Padma and is now listed in the liner’s fleet.

Eastmed has been active in the secondhand container vessel market over the past few years. According to Equasis, the company took delivery ofChance, a 2024-built, 1,868-TEU vessel, in a resale deal last year. Eastmed was also linked to another 2023-built feeder vessel two years ago.

Fleet overview

Eastmed is one of Greece’s most prominent shipping firms, managing a fleet of around 80 vessels, including tankers, bulk carriers and container ships. The container segment currently accounts for approximately 12 assets.

The company is also investing in newbuildings, running a programme for four Ultramax bulk carriers in China, scheduled for delivery in 2026.

Thanassis Martinos recently received the Greek Shipping Leadership Award at the annual Capital Link Greek Shipping Forum. In his speech, he reflected on recent geopolitical challenges shaping maritime trade, highlighting the Russia-Ukraine war and the Red Sea crisis.

He also addressed the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shipping, noting despite technological advancements, even AI could not have predicted the industry’s recent challenges.
