The fire on the container ship Marie Maersk, which broke out on August 13th while sailing from Rotterdam to Asia, is not yet fully extinguished. The ship is located off the coast of Liberia, where external firefighting teams have now boarded to assist the crew.
”The external firefighters are on board the Marie Maersk and are actively fighting the fire together with the ship’s crew. The fire is contained, but not yet fully under control, and a port refuge is still being considered,” Maersk informs according to Maritime-Executive.
Over the weekend, the crew, with help from tugboats and an offshore supply ship, managed to prevent the fire from spreading further. All 23 crew members are safe and sound, and the ship remains stable with fully functional machinery and navigation systems.
Marie Maersk was built in 2013, sails under the Danish flag, and has a capacity of 19,000 TEU. Maersk states that it is in close contact with customers about the status of their containers, but the extent of the damage is still unclear.
