Contractor Jan De Nul has initiated installation of the monopile foundations for RWE’s Thor offshore windfarm on 29 April 2025
The heavy-lift vessel Les Alizés installed the first of what will be a total of 72 monopiles for what will be Denmark’s largest windfarm to date.
The Thor windfarm will have a capacity of more than 1 GW and is being built off the west coast of Jutland, some 22 km offshore.
The monopile foundations for the project have range is size up to 100 m and weigh up to 1,500 tonnes. Les Alizés loads the foundations at Eemshaven in The Netherlands. The final monopile is due to be installed towards the end of 2025.
In order to safely execute the project, Les Alizés has been equipped with a motion-compensated pile gripper which is capable of installing monopile foundations with diameters up to 13 m.
Apart from installing the foundations for Thor, Jan De Nul will also install scour protection and will also install the inter-array cables and the export cables connecting the offshore and onshore substations.
