The first floating storage regasification unit (FSRU), Golar Igloo, for the Eems Energy Terminal has just arrived in Eemshaven, the Netherlands
Golar Igloo, along with a second FSRU Eemshaven LNG which will also arrive soon, will form the new floating receiving terminal which is being developed to increase security of gas supply to the Netherlands following the pivot from Russian gas.
“In the coming years, the terminal will convert LNG into gaseous natural gas. An important step for the realisation of the project,” said Gasunie in a social media post.
LNG regasified at the terminal will be transported through the country’s underground gas network located near the terminal. Using the terminal means an additional 8Bn cubic metres (bcm) of natural gas can be supplied to the Netherlands every year.
The capacity has been completely sold out, with ČEZ and Shell Western LNG jointly contracting 7 bcm and Engie purchasing the remaining 1 bcm.
Until this year, the Netherlands only had anLNGterminal in the port of Rotterdam. The expansion in Eemshaven and the optimisation of the Rotterdam terminal will double theLNGimport capacity.
The first delivery ofLNGthrough the terminal is expected to take place as early as mid-September.
Gasunie said in the future, the terminal can be adapted for importing green hydrogen.
