‘Flying’ in New York Harbor with zero emissions

Must read

With several European and US projects set to launch in 2025, Artemis Technologies demonstrated its innovative zero-emissions electric hydrofoil technology for press, owners in downtown Manhattan

New York’s sparkling skyline served as the backdrop for the recent demonstration of a high-speed, electric-powered hydrofoil that is changing the conversation around public waterborne transit.

“It’s a big year,” the co-founder of Artemis Technologies, the maker of the12-passenger, electric-powered hydrofoil water taxi, David Tyler told us during the 13 March demonstration run along the Hudson River and in New York Harbor. Mr Tyler’s excitement alludes to several ground-breaking ferry, pilot boat and crew transfer vessel projects that will launch or are testing the Belfast-based firm’s electronic hydrofoil technology in 2025.

For the demonstration run in New York Harbor, invited media and metropolitan area passenger vessel operators were treated to a ride on Artemis Technologies’ EF-12 Escape, a well-appointed water taxi with comfortable lounge chair-like seating. This model was originally built and outfitted for a Middle Eastern interest.

Passengers boarded the e-foiler at the North Cove Marina near the World Financial Center in downtown Manhattan for the demonstration ride. Once the vessel left the dock it seamlessly transitioned to foiling operation within seconds. The carbon fibre vessel ‘flew’ effortlessly along the water, climbing to a speed of 28 knots, while maintaining a smooth, jostle-free ride and noise-free cabin. Seatbelts, available at each passenger’s seat, and seasickness were never a concern.

A single, ‘winged’ Artemis ePod propulsion unit amidships and foils aft allowed the 12.5-m vessel to skim above the water, minimising drag and lowering wake. Propulsion power is supplied by four 103-kW Artemis Technologies battery packs.

The vessel can be quick charged in an hour via an Artemis Technologies’ mobile, quick-charging system at the dock, according to Mr Tyler.

Operated on 100% electricity, the EF-12 Escape does not have diesel engine vibration, noise, smoke or fumes. In short, its zero-emissions operation offers a pleasing passenger experience – one that will be coming soon to commuters on the US West Coast.
