Following the completion of the port expansion at the Port of Fredericia, the company Fredericia Container Terminal A/S is now operational, with Fredericia Shipping as the majority shareholder and APM Terminals and ADP as minority shareholders.
The parties aim to develop and secure the future growth of container volumes at the Danish port facility. As part of the port expansion, ADP has invested a sum of USD 463,800 to support the central logistics hub of Western Denmark.
With over 150,000 square meters of container space and a 450-meter deep-water quay, the newly established Fredericia Container Terminal A/S is positioned to leverage the growth potential of the Southern Denmark region, offering short distances to final destinations and to the Fredericia Shipping A/S terminal in Taulov, where Fredericia Container Terminal A/S has an additional 50,000 square meters.
In the summer of 2023, ADP and Fredericia Shipping announced a joint venture aimed at operating and developing the container terminal in Taulov and at the Port of Fredericia, once the port expansion was ready to become operational in the autumn of 2025.
To incorporate new international expertise and support the continued development of the container business at the Fredericia port facility, ADP decided to include APM Terminals in the partnership with Fredericia Shipping to establish the new operating company, Fredericia Container Terminal A/S.
Fredericia Shipping A/S holds the majority stake in the company and will continue to manage, administer, and operate the terminal, while APM Terminals, through its non-controlling minority stake, will contribute investments and international expertise.
“With our investment in the port expansion and the guaranteed capacity to handle the sustained growth in containers that we have seen in recent years, we are now even better prepared to respond to the current trend: shipping lines are seeking ports close to the cargo’s final destination. This trend is also driving growth at the Port of Fredericia, and for this reason, we expect to continue investing in development through Fredericia Container Terminal A/S in the coming years,” stated Rune D. Rasmussen, CEO of ADP.
“We are very proud that APM Terminals sees the same growth opportunities in the Port of Fredericia as we do. In close collaboration with Fredericia Shipping, we have developed the container activity to its current level, and we are confident that APM Terminals can contribute significantly to its future development. Together, Fredericia Shipping, APM Terminals, and ADP can create the best operational framework for the expected growth in container volumes in Western Denmark,” he added.
Lars Vang, Head of Joint Ventures and Strategic Alliances at APM Terminals, stated that his company “can support Fredericia Container Terminal A/S in the operation and development of an independent terminal with our international expertise in areas such as operational excellence and safety.
Through this new collaboration in the Port of Fredericia, we can facilitate the growth we expect in Western Denmark, and together we will explore how and in which investments the container terminal can be further optimized.
Klaus Andersen, CEO of Fredericia Shipping and Fredericia Container Terminal, commented that “we are excited about the new partnership in Fredericia Container Terminal, now with APM Terminals as part of the ownership structure. We welcome the new competencies that Fredericia Container Terminal will acquire, and above all the investment capacity this brings. We expect to make significant investments in new equipment in the coming years to benefit both the terminal’s efficiency and its green transition. At the same time, we expect the new ownership to contribute with even more flexible solutions for our customers in a terminal that will remain independent and neutral”.
“Fredericia Container Terminal operates both the container terminal in the port of Fredericia and in Taulov, which gives us unique capacity opportunities to support the continued development of the Taulov Dry Port area and Western Denmark in general, especially in rail transport”, he concluded.
