Furetank has inked a contract with China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Yangzhou for two more Vinga-class dual-fuel tankers
The repeat order brings Furetank’s Vinga newbuildings on order to six vessels. The 17,999-dwt tankers are the latest of the sister vessels designed with a focus on energy efficiency and minimal environmental impact, all commercially operated by Furetank.
Vinga-class vessels sport dual-fuel capability, running on LNG or liquid biogas, and are designed with a battery-hybrid system to reduce fuel and energy consumption, resulting in extensively lower emissions of CO2, SOx, NOx and hazardous particles.
The new ships will be equipped to operate cargo pumps with 6.6-kV high-voltage shore power to reduce emissions even further as soon as ports offer the opportunity. It has a cargo capacity of 20,306 m3 in 12 epoxy-coated cargo tanks, ice-class 1A and an efficient cargo-handling system.
China Merchants Jinling Shipyard will deliver the ships Q3 2024 and Q2 2025 respectively.
Furetank chief executive Lars Höglund commented, “The fact that we have been able to build 15 vessels of the same design shows they fulfill a need in our market. In our view, it proves we were right to put considerable efforts and investments into an efficient and environmentally friendly design.”
Earlier this year, Furetank was granted a green credit guarantee by the Swedish Export Credit Agency for financing a tanker that met “superior environmental and climate standards”. The green credit guarantee is granted based on the EU taxonomy, an assessment tool that will guide international capital towards green investments.
The operator has since embarked on a joint venture with Canada-based Algoma Central Corp to establish FureBear, a new entity that will operate four dual-fuel ice-class product tankers.
