Furlog has introduced to the market the new 45′ high-cube Hcpwdb containers, that is ‘high cube pallet wide dry bulk’, in response to a growing demand and the need to mitigate risks deriving from market uncertainties, such as the -57% drop in freight rates between Italy and China compared to the previous year. The global maritime industry, explains the multimodal transport company in a note, is in fact experiencing a phase of strong expansion: July 2025 data indicates that global volumes have exceeded 16 million TEU for the third consecutive month, reaching 16.57 million TEU. This volume represents a 3% increase compared to June and a 12% increase compared to 2023.
The new containers, designed by co-managing director Giuseppe Buganè, offer a 13% increase in loading capacity compared to standard 40-foot models, reaching a total cubic capacity of 89 m³. The unit also guarantees full multimodal compatibility and integration, with ship, train, truck, thanks to compliance with ISO standards.
To achieve these performances, Furlog has optimized the /volume ratio: the structure is made of Corten A steel, a lightweight and rust-resistant material. Despite the additional reinforcements, explains the operator, the use of this steel allowed the tare weight to be kept at only 5,000 kg, thus guaranteeing a net load capacity of 29 tonnes.
The 45′ dry bulk unit can contain a load of 7.2 tonnes per m², a value decidedly higher than the 3-5 tonnes per m² of traditional containers. The Hcpwdb containers are designed to handle different types of cargo, from products packaged on euro-pallets to bulk or liquid goods, with flexi tanks.
Operational flexibility is guaranteed by the triple rear access, as the rear door can be divided into three openings adaptable to the different loading and unloading needs depending on the commodity and packaging. Bulk goods can be loaded quickly through three large openings on the roof (2.85 m x 1.65 m): this is a feature that reduces empty journeys and increases efficiency, contributing to CO2 emission savings.
A distinctive element, continues the note, is personnel safety as the containers are equipped with safety lines, an external ladder, harness and steel cable for anchoring during maneuvers. A double authorization system has also been implemented that links the opening of the case from the outside to the permission granted from the inside, elevating cargo safety standards.
Giuseppe Buganè concluded by stating that, in the current scenario of uncertainty, innovation is fundamental to face present and future challenges.
