Finland – 27 August 2025 – In a decisive move to strengthen clean energy accessibility in the Baltic Sea region, Nordic energy company Gasum has successfully completed its first LNG bunkering operation at the Port of Tolkkinen, located adjacent to the Porvoo refinery in southern Finland. The operation was carried out for MT Ramira, a state-of-the-art tanker operated by Swedish shipping company Furetank.
This milestone marks the entry of Tolkkinen into Gasum’s growing network of bunkering hubs, now capable of supplying both Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and bio-LNG to vessels operating in the area. It strengthens the fuel logistics chain in one of Finland’s most strategically important maritime and industrial regions, while advancing the transition to lower-emission shipping.
“This operation demonstrates our commitment to expanding clean fuel availability across the Nordics,” shared Gasum. “Tolkkinen now becomes a key node in supporting shipping companies that are taking decisive steps toward decarbonisation.”
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is a cleaner-burning alternative to conventional marine fuels, offering immediate reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, NOₓ, SOₓ, and particulate matter. When paired with Bio-LNG—a renewable liquefied biogas produced from organic waste—the environmental benefits increase significantly, enabling near carbon-neutral shipping. Both fuels are fully compatible with existing LNG-powered vessels, offering shipowners a practical, scalable route to meet the IMO’s decarbonisation goals.
The Port of Tolkkinen, strategically located near Finland’s industrial heartland, is now part of Gasum’s growing LNG bunkering infrastructure. This expansion strengthens the company’s mission to provide accessible, clean fuel options across the Nordics and Baltic Sea, helping shipowners decarbonise without compromising operational efficiency.
With the ability to supply both LNG and renewable bio-LNG, Gasum offers a practical, scalable energy solution that aligns with the maritime sector’s evolving regulatory and environmental requirements.
The MT Ramira belongs to Furetank’s Vinga series, a new generation of dual-fuel product tankers designed to set benchmarks in energy efficiency and environmental performance. These vessels are equipped to run on LNG or bio-LNG and incorporate a battery hybrid system to optimize energy use across all operational profiles.
Designed with a forward-looking approach, the Vinga vessels are also prepared for 6.6 kV shore power connection, enabling zero-emission cargo handling as ports transition to shore-based power infrastructure.
With a cargo capacity of 20,306 cubic meters across 12 epoxy-coated tanks, ice class 1A certification, and an advanced, flexible cargo handling system, the Vinga ships combine technological innovation with practical utility. Their design has earned them the best Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) rating in their class globally, according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
This first LNG bunkering in Tolkkinen was made possible through the close cooperation between Gasum and Furetank — two companies committed to accelerating maritime sustainability through actionable infrastructure and vessel innovation.
“Every operation of this kind is a step forward, not just for our companies but for the industry at large,” shared Gasum.
“The ability to work with partners like Furetank — who are clearly ahead of the curve — makes this transition not only possible, but successful.”
Furetank is a full-service Swedish shipping company based on the island of Donsö, with deep maritime roots stretching back to the 18th century. Today, it combines tradition with innovation, delivering shipping services that emphasize quality, safety, and environmental responsibility.
Furetank’s operations include technical management, crewing, chartering, safety, and vetting, providing comprehensive solutions to modern maritime challenges. The company continues to invest in a new-generation fleet that aligns with the shipping industry’s most ambitious decarbonisation targets.
Gasum is a Nordic energy company driving the transition to a carbon-neutral future through clean fuel solutions for marine, industrial, and road transport sectors.
