GCU Combustion Test Successfully Concluded! World’s Largest LNG Bunkering Vessel Achieves Breakthrough in Functional Upgrade

Must read

On September 17, a key milestone was reached in the GCU (Gas Combustion Unit) upgrade and modification project for the LNG transport and bunkering vessel “Hai Yang Shi You 301” at Wenchong Repair & Construction’s wharf, which belongs to China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited (CSSC) Guangzhou Shipyard International.

Around the LNG supply gasification skid, testing work was intensively carried out. The project team from Wenchong Repair & Construction, the shipowner’s representatives from CNOOC Energy Technology & Services, equipment supplier 711 Research Institute, and personnel from various gas supply units worked in close coordination. After strictly implementing the process test plan and completing all preparatory work, the combustion test was efficiently completed in just over 100 minutes, witnessing the rebirth of the GCU.

Test data showed that all performance indicators of the upgraded GCU on the “Hai Yang Shi You 301” met the original design requirements and reached internationally advanced levels. This achievement marks the perfect conclusion of the vessel’s GCU upgrade and modification project.

It is understood that one of the core tasks of this upgrade and modification for the “Hai Yang Shi You 301” was the performance optimization of the original GCU: by upgrading four dilution fans and increasing their air volume, along with corresponding modifications to the power supply system, the original GCU’s gas combustion rate was improved while effectively reducing emission temperatures, achieving a dual enhancement of environmental protection and efficiency.

The successful completion of this modification was made possible through the collaborative efforts of all parties: the shipowner, CNOOC Energy Technology & Services, provided support throughout the process, ensuring the project direction aligned with actual operational needs; the 711 Research Institute developed a scientific and feasible technical solution based on rigorous calculations and simulation; Wenchong Repair & Construction ensured the effective implementation of the modifications through efficient on-site construction. Ultimately, this first domestically produced GCU equipment achieved a “complete transformation,” not only laying a solid foundation for the subsequent stable operation of the “Hai Yang Shi You 301” but also accumulating valuable experience in the field of marine engineering equipment upgrades in China, contributing to technological breakthroughs in the industry.
