Germany boosts Chinese imports as tariffs shift

Must read

Germany has increased purchases of Chinese goods in key price-sensitive categories, with imports rising 10.5 per cent to EUR97.6 billion (US$114.25 billion) in the first seven months of 2025, reported Reuters.

The growth rate of Chinese imports was more than double that of Germany’s overall imports, which rose 4.9 per cent year on year to EUR796.6 billion between January and July, according to the Institute for Employment Research (IAB).

From October to June, price- and calendar-adjusted data showed sharp increases in Chinese imports of copper (up 91 per cent), apparel (up 24 per cent) and toys, games and sporting goods (up 12 per cent), based on German statistics office figures.

Enzo Weber, head of IAB’s macroeconomic analysis unit, said Germany has not seen a broad surge in Chinese goods, but certain product groups show clear effects from shifting global trade dynamics.

The trend comes as US tariff policies continue to disrupt global supply chains, prompting European buyers to seek cost-effective alternatives.
