Must read

Meridian Port Services Ltd. (MPS) reached another milestone with the delivery of the full 270,000 square meter development under Phase 2 of the Tema Port Expansion Project, an achievement that marks the completion of the plan for the yard, executed by the contractor joint venture De Simone and Eiffage Génie Civil Marine, under the supervision of Aecom, the project management consultants.

The ceremony also celebrated the achievement of 2.5 million safe man-hours without a single Lost Time Injury (LTI).

In his opening speech, Ernest Lartey, Aecom’s project manager, praised the entire construction team for their commitment to safety and excellence. “Since the site’s inauguration in June 2023, we have not recorded any Lost Time Injury (LTI), a remarkable achievement in 27 months of construction,” he stated.

Gregory Le Roux, project director of the joint venture Eiffage Génie Civil Marine SA & De Simone Ltd., added that, at one point, the project employed over 600 Ghanaians, significantly contributing to local job creation and skills development. Le Roux also praised the team’s collective effort to lay 13.5 million pavers.

Speaking at the delivery, MPS CEO Mohamed Samara described the milestone as “the best birthday gift” of his life, adding 270,000 square meters of state-of-the-art terminal space to the million square meters already operational.

The expansion includes not only the new yard but also complementary facilities such as a spare parts warehouse and a maritime yard built by Consar Ghana. All this completes the terminal’s configuration. Further enhancements, such as an export inspection platform, are expected before the end of the year, which will further strengthen the terminal’s technological advantage.

With the completion of Phase 2, the terminal’s surface area has been expanded to 127 hectares, fully reclaimed from the Atlantic Ocean.

To complete the occasion, three state-of-the-art Kohler power plants arrived in the country and are in the process of being commissioned. Each is powered by turbocharged 16-cylinder engines with optimized emissions, capable of generating 4,500 kVA with voltages of up to 20,000 volts. These plants will ensure a sustainable power supply for the terminal’s extensive operational needs, both at the quay and in the yard.
