Google plans $10 bln data center hub in Visakhapatnam, backed by subsea cable network

Must read

Google plans to invest $10 billion (about 887.3 billion rupees) in developing a 1-GW data center cluster near the port city of Visakhapatnam, in India’s Andhra Pradesh state.

The project includes three sites — Adavivaram, Tharluvada (Visakhapatnam district), and Rambilli (Anakapalli district) — scheduled for commissioning by July 2028.

A key component of the investment program will be the construction of coastal telecommunications infrastructure: three high-capacity subsea fiber-optic cables, dedicated cable landing stations along the Andhra Pradesh coast, and new urban fiber networks. These elements are intended to ensure international connectivity and bandwidth for the data center cluster.

According to Indian media, the deal is expected to be formalized on October 14 during a meeting between Google executives and Andhra Pradesh’s Minister for IT and Electronics, Nara Lokesh, in New Delhi. The Andhra Pradesh Investment Promotion Board is expected to approve the plan on October 9.

State authorities have previously announced intentions to build three cable landing stations in Visakhapatnam to double the capacity of international communication channels compared to Mumbai.

Land acquisition procedures are ongoing around one of the sites in Tharluvada, where authorities aim to accelerate resolution amid legal disputes.

With the planned subsea cables and cable landing stations on the Bay of Bengal coast, the Visakhapatnam cluster is positioned to become one of Asia’s largest regional data center hubs directly supported by marine telecom infrastructure.
