Hanwha Ocean reports that it has received Approval in Principle (AIP) from ABS under the SMART (SHM) Tier 3 framework for its latest hull structural health monitoring system.
The system is designed to assess structural damage to ships and offshore platforms during operation, supporting maintenance decisions to improve safety and operational efficiency.
ABS SMART (SHM) Tier 3 classification is awarded to systems that combine onboard hull sensors with algorithms capable of estimating structural conditions at critical areas, including locations without direct sensor coverage.
The AIP follows on from a collaboration agreement signed by Hanwha Ocean and ABS in 2024, which focuses on joint development in digitalisation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and sustainability.
“ABS celebrates this achievement with Hanwha Ocean, a milestone in our collective pursuit of safety at sea,” said Patrick Ryan, ABS Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer.
“As a leader in supporting the adoption of smart technologies in the maritime and offshore sectors, ABS recognises the transformative capabilities of these systems – advancing health and condition awareness, operational optimisation and, eventually, classification supported by condition-based programmes.”
