Hyundai Heavy Industries-Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) reported it has tested a LNG-hydrogen mixed-fuel operation in a four-stroke HiMSEN engine – a first in South Korea’s shipbuilding industry
The South Korean enginebuilder said it tested a 1.5-MW LNG Hydrogen HiMSEN engine that was developed with its own inhouse technology, with its performance and stability confirmed at HHI-EMD’s R&D centre.
The mixing ratio of hydrogen was 25%, which could reduce CO2 emissions by 30% compared with a diesel engine, according to the company.
HHI-EMD said this LNG-Hydrogen HiMSEN engine can be used as a stationary engine at a power plant, marine genset engine or ship’s propulsion engine. The engine can also use hydrogen boil-off gas for fuel.
HHI-EMD has been developing the eco-friendly engines that use LNG, methanol and ammonia for fuel, with plan to launch a pure hydrogen combustion engine by 2025.
HHI-EMD recently opened a new factory to produce dual-fuel engines in anticipation of increased demand.
