HHI-EMD to produce TCT axial turbochargers under long-term deal

Generally acknowledged as the world’s largest two-stroke enginebuilder, Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine & Machinery Division (HHI-EMD) is now licensed to offer TCT axial-turbochargers optimised for use with IMO Tier III engines.

Under a 10-year licensing agreement with MAN Energy Solutions struck late last year, the South Korean enginebuilder will manufacture the compact turbochargers, which are specifically designed for conventional and dual-fuel two-stroke and four-stroke engines, ranging from 6 MW to 24 MW output per turbocharger.

This size of turbocharger is typically used on the main engines of container ships, tankers and bulk carriers. Over the next decade, more of these types of ships are expected to be ordered with dual-fuel engines to comply with tightening international greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions regulations, generating demand for compatible turbochargers.

HHI-EMD also holds licences to manufacture turbochargers from ABB Turbocharging and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Commenting on the agreement last year, HHI-EMD executive vice president C Y Lyu, said, “In adding MAN Energy Solutions’ latest axial-turbocharger product for two-stroke engines to our portfolio, this licence agreement starts a new chapter in the co-operation between our two companies.” Mr Lyu said this agreement “will strengthen our market position significantly and enable us to fulfil requests from shipowners worldwide.”

HHI-EMDowns a 35% market share of the global marine engine market. Manufacturing marine engines since 1979, HHI-EMD reached the production milestone of 150M bhp in two-stroke engines in 2015.

Launched February 2019 to eventually replace the TCA series, MAN Energy Solutions’ TCT series began with the TCT40 designed for supercharger engine output of 9,460 kW, and subsequently followed by the TCT30, TCT50 and TCT60. Ultimately, the series will comprise six frame-sizes including TCT70 and TCT80 units.

MAN Energy Solutions said newly developed radial compressor and axial turbines are key components of the TCT series. Both have been developed with new design features, backed by the latest simulation technologies, resulting in a very compact and lightweight turbocharger design. The TCT40, for example, has a length of 2,290 mm, breadth of 1,260 mm and height of 1,275 mm, with a weight of 2,500 kg. As a result of this compact design, TCT turbochargers are up to 40% lighter and 30% smaller than previous turbocharger series.

A key benefit of this new-generation turbocharger is a higher charging efficiency, up to 20% more specific airflow and 10% increased charging pressure. Thanks to its superior charging efficiencies, wide compressor maps and ample matching options, TCT turbochargers can easily be matched to engines. Their variability covers not only a wide range of engine-tuning options and fuel types, but also the new requirements of today’s exhaust-gas after-treatment systems for IMO Tier III operations.
