IAPH supports IMO Net Zero Framework measures

Must read

IAPH managing director Patrick Verhoeven spoke about the importance of adopting the IMO Net Zero Framework (NZF) at an event on the decarbonisation of shipping organised by Accelleron and held during London International Shipping Week on Tuesday. The NZF was agreed upon last April. A ratifying vote by Member States on the MARPOL Annex VI 2025 resolution will take place during the week of 13 October. Speaking on the importance of introducing a global fuel standard for shipping, and a universal economic measure to send a clear signal to industry, Patrick said that it would give the incentive for the uptake of new low- and zero-carbon fuels.

He explained that IAPH supports the economic measure as it will also provide vital funding for infrastructure investments in ports of developing countries, in order for them not to be left behind in the energy transition. Failing to adopt the measure, he said, would likely lead to more regional decarbonisation measures for shipping, making compliance extremely challenging and creating unintended consequences, such as the ones seen already in Europe.
