The International Maritime Organization is intensifying its efforts to prepare seafarers for the energy transition of maritime transport, in line with its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from ships. These guidelines establish an international framework for the development and approval of training for seafarers working on board ships using alternative fuels and new technologies.
Interim training guidelines specific to fuels and technologies are also being developed, such as /ethyl alcohol, ammonia, hydrogen, LPG, battery-powered ships and fuel cells. Along with the regulation IMO is also expanding its support to member states.
With new training standards, increased technical support to member states and closer engagement with the industry and academia, IMO is laying the groundwork for a just and well-prepared energy transition for seafarers.
