According to recent reports, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is inaugurating the largest and most costly cruise terminal in the country today at Mumbai’s Ballard Pier.
The newly established Mumbai International Cruise Terminal at Indira Dock is poised to elevate India’s status as a premier cruise tourism hub. With an impressive investment of ₹556 crore, this expansive facility covers 415,000 square feet and features four levels designed to accommodate approximately one million passengers each year—averaging around 10,000 travelers daily.
Cruise operations officially commenced in April 2024 when Union Minister Sarbanda Sonowal launched the first departures from this state-of-the-art terminal. The facility can host up to five cruise liners simultaneously, ensuring efficient turnaround times even during peak seasons. It boasts 72 counters dedicated to check-in and immigration processes.
The operational area spans 170,000 square feet and includes ample parking for over 300 vehicles, facilitating smooth transit for both passengers and visitors alike.
Architecturally inspired by oceanic themes, the terminal features a wavy ceiling design along with minimalist yet practical elements that cater not only to travelers but also serve as a recreational space for locals seeking leisure activities such as shopping and dining.
This initiative forms a crucial part of the government’s ambitious Cruise Bharat Mission aimed at boosting cruise tourism across India. Authorities are targeting an annual influx of about 200 cruise ships—each carrying roughly 500 guests—to further enhance this burgeoning sector.
