Stiesdal Offshore’s TetraSub floating foundation has been selected by the Highland Wind consortium for the 100-MW Pentland floating offshore windfarm off the north coast of Scotland

The floating windfarm is majority owned by a fund managed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) with Hexicon as a minority shareholder. Project development activities are being led by CIP’s development partner, Copenhagen Offshore Partners.

Stiesdal founder Henrik Stiesdal said, “The Pentland project is an important step in our ambition to demonstrate that floating offshore wind can be industralised in the same way that bottom-fixed wind turbines have been. We believe industrialisation is the way to go for affordable offshore wind power on a global scale.

“Together with Shell, RWE and TEPCO RP, we deployed our first floater last year, when the TetraSpar Demonstrator was installed at the MET Centre off the coast of Norway.

“We describe it as the world’s first fully industrialised floating offshore wind structure, being assembled from components that had all been factory-produced.

“The TetraSub is the semi-submersible variant of the Tetra concept and is better suited to the relatively shallow water conditions at Pentland. Marine operations are also easier, which is important in the rough waters off the north coast of Scotland.”

The TetraSub retains the logistic advantages of the TetraSpar, being assembled in port from industrially manufactured components.

“Through the Pentland project, we look forward to advancing through the next generation of floating offshore wind turbines, with capacity of 14 MW and more.”
