Must read

The General Company for Ports of Iraq announced the successful placement of the sixth concrete segment of the immersed tunnel project at Al Faw Grand Port—one of the largest strategic infrastructure projects in the Middle East. The milestone was achieved with the participation of the Italian consulting firm, the Dutch company responsible for immersion operations, and Daewoo Engineering & Construction, the Korean company executing the port project.

Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, Director General of the company, stated: “The sixth concrete segment of the immersed tunnel at Al Faw Grand Port has been successfully placed. This project is among the most significant strategic undertakings in the region, and its progress reflects the collaborative efforts of the Italian consultant, the Dutch immersion contractor, and Daewoo, the Korean firm overseeing the port’s construction.”

He added: “The floating and installation operations of the sixth segment within the Khor Al-Zubair navigation channel represent a major step forward in completing the tunnel. The total achieved length of the immersed tunnel now stands at 756 meters, with an additional 189 meters of fixed approaches from the Um Qasir side, bringing the total length to 945 meters as of today.”

He further noted: “The seventh segment has been prepared at the logistics dock and will soon begin the floating process. Once installed, the tunnel’s length will reach 882 meters, and with the fixed approaches, the total will extend to 1,071 meters. This marks a qualitative achievement that reflects the accelerating pace of work in line with the established timeline.”

He emphasized: “This progress represents a major engineering breakthrough for the immersed tunnel project, which is the first of its kind in the region. It is directly linked to Al Faw Grand Port, serving as a strategic cornerstone of the Development Road and the regional trade corridor.”

The accomplishments in the immersed tunnel project reflect Iraq’s determined commitment to completing one of the foundational pillars of Al Faw Grand Port, positioning it as a strategic gateway to global trade routes and a landmark in the reconstruction of the national infrastructure.
