Israel’s attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters

Must read

Activists in the flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza announced the interception of their ships by Israeli naval forces.

“Around 8:30 PM Gaza time, many boats of the Global Sumud flotilla, mainly the Alma, the Sirius, and the Adara, were illegally intercepted and Israeli occupation forces boarded them in international waters,” stated the Global Sumud flotilla. “Besides the boats whose interception was confirmed, the live broadcast and communications with several other vessels were lost,” the same source added.

What Greek and International media report

Israel is committing a clear act of piracy in international waters against a solidarity mission to the Palestinian people by attacking the Global Sumud Flotilla, which consists of more than 40 boats with 500 activists from around the world. Among them are 6 Greek boats with activists.

Israeli vessels cut them off and ordered the Global Sumud Flotilla to turn off their engines. The response they received from the activists is that the act is illegal according to International law and that the International Court has issued a decision for the unimpeded provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Subsequently, Israel began the operation to intercept the ‘Global Sumud’ activist flotilla, which is sailing loaded with humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip, by implementing a communications “blackout” through jamming, and Israeli soldiers boarded the flotilla’s boats.

The “Alma” was one of the first against which communications were cut, aiming to isolate it from the rest of the flotilla and interrupt the live camera broadcast while its crew was arrested.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is in a state of “emergency,” with Israeli vessels having begun the intervention operation and with the activists wearing life jackets.

According to international media, nearly 20 Israeli warships are in the area, while drones are flying over the vessels.

The vessels of the Global Sumud Flotilla are 75 nautical miles from Gaza, having passed the point where the previous Madleen mission, in June, was intercepted by the Israeli navy.

The “GlobalSumud” flotilla stated it will continue its course even if some of its vessels are intercepted by Israeli forces, Al Jazeera reports.

The live video broadcast from the cameras has stopped on many boats, due to jamming by Israeli forces.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, sometimes referred to as the Global Freedom Flotilla, is an international maritime initiative led by civil society aiming to break the Israeli blockade of the Gaza Strip and deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

The initiative began in July 2025, and was organized by the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Global Movement for Gaza, the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, and the Sumud Nusantara mission of 9 countries.

The fleet consists of over 40 ships with 500 participants from more than 44 countries, making it the largest civilian-led flotilla of its kind in history.

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) is the largest naval mission organized to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza. Coordinated by numerous organizers, sailors, doctors, artists, and solidarity activists from over 40 countries, the flotilla is a non-violent humanitarian mission responding to the ongoing genocide and siege of the Palestinian people.

As announced from August and September 2025, vessels of all sizes would set sail from ports around the world heading towards Gaza to open a humanitarian sea corridor.

The flotilla brings together participants and organizers from the Global March to Gaza, the Sumud Convoy, the Sumud Nusantara, and the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, building on decades of Palestinian resistance and international solidarity to change the global narrative and confront international complicity. Independent of any government or political party, the GSF is guided by a commitment to justice, dignity, and the sanctity of human life.

Sokratis Famellos on the attack on the Global Summit Flotilla vessels “The evolving attack on the Global Summit Flotilla vessels, which are carrying humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people, constitutes yet another facet of Netanyahu’s murderous and terroristic policy,” states in a post on social media the president of SYRIZA-PS, Sokratis Famellos.

He then adds: “It is a blatant violation of international law, an attack on humanity and solidarity. The government cannot remain silent, nor can the international community.

Support for the flotilla of volunteer vessels is required so that aid reaches the children and civilians in Gaza who need it. And strict sanctions on Israel with full protection for the volunteers. The voices of Democrats all over the world are growing louder, Solidarity and Democracy are not terrorized, they are not silenced.”

Alexis Charitsis: The attack by Israeli forces on the Global Sumud Flotilla vessels is illegal and terroristic.

“The attack by Israeli forces on the Global Sumud Flotilla vessels is illegal and terroristic,” states in a post the president of the New Left, Alexis Charitsis.

He notes that he communicated with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and adds: “I called him -once again- demanding the obvious: Greece’s intervention to ensure the right of the vessels to reach Gaza and to guarantee the safety of the members of the Greek mission.

It is time for action. Tomorrow in Parliament, I will call all parties of the democratic opposition to a joint statement condemning Israel’s terroristic attack. Let the Parliament become a step of disobedience and an expression of solidarity with Gaza. And of course, everyone to the demonstrations throughout the country.”

Concluding, he states: “Our thoughts are with the friends, comrades, of the Greek mission.

We are with you.

Solidarity until the end.

For justice to prevail.”
