Kingston Freeport Terminal (KFTL) received two new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, which were transported on board the heavy load carrier Zhen Hua 29.
The machines will be added to the 16 already existing and operating along the 2,400 meters of KFTL’s added dock, according to Alphaliner.
The units, which have a reach of 60 meters and a lifting height of 52 meters above rail, were manufactured by the Chinese state-owned company Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Limited (ZPMC).
“Ten years ago, the CMA CGM group received a 30-year concession from the Port Authority of Jamaica to operate and develop the Kingston container port. Thus, KFTL became a subsidiary of CMA CGM, which reportedly transferred ownership of KFTL in 2020 to its terminal operating joint venture, Terminal Link,” stated Alphaliner.
“Since then, the port has been used primarily by the French shipping line, which contributes approximately one third of the traffic to the Jamaican logistics hub. CMA CGM deploys vessels of up to 15,500 TEU in its PEX 2 service between East Asia, the Caribbean, and North Central America (NCSA). ZIM is also a major customer, operating similar vessels in the ZCP service between Asia and North America, under a vessel sharing agreement with Mediterranean Shipping Company,” it added.
