La Spezia Container Terminal, the new automated gate has entered into operation

Must read

LA SPEZIA – The new automated gate at the La Spezia Container Terminal (LSCT) became operational today, an infrastructure that represents a further step in the digitalization and innovation journey of Contship Group’s La Spezia terminal. A step forward in the digitalization of the Contship Group’s gateway terminal with the aim of improving the efficiency and safety of access operations.

The project, developed in collaboration with the Eastern Ligurian Sea Port System Authority and with a leading international technology partner, aims to make the terminal entry procedure faster, safer, and more efficient, improving the overall quality of service offered to truckers. A further important benefit concerns environmental sustainability: shorter waiting times will in fact result in lower emissions.
Equipped with four access lanes, it is capable of handling all types of traffic, including exceptional loads. The new system uses high-resolution cameras and optical character recognition (OCR) technologies, integrated into the gate’s GOS (Gate Operating System) software which interacts with the LSCT TOS (Terminal Operating System). The collected information allows for the automatic execution of the necessary technical checks for the access of vehicles and their loads to the operational area, guaranteeing high levels of accuracy and making the entire process more fluid.

The infrastructure includes OCR portals for detecting all information on the transported containers, LPR cameras for recognizing vehicle license plates; the exit lanes are equipped with interactive totems, intercoms, barriers, traffic lights, and weighbridges. These systems will therefore allow truckers to complete the gate-in procedures autonomously and safely.
The start-up was preceded by a series of tests carried out during the summer and continuing until October, with positive results also achieved thanks to the collaboration of the truckers.

“This project represents the first piece in the innovation journey of our La Spezia gateway” – stated Matthieu Gasselin, CEO of Contship. – “It is a significant investment, aimed at simplifying access procedures and improving the efficiency of our terminal operations. I wish to thank the Port System Authority and the involved LSCT Team for achieving this important goal”.

The new infrastructure confirms the reference role of La Spezia Container Terminal in the national terminal landscape, contributing to the modernization and competitiveness of the Port of La Spezia and, more generally, of the Mediterranean port system.
