Must read

On June 26, 2025, local time in Africa, a DWT 230,000-ton vessel crewed by Dalian Zhonghai Maritime was loading bauxite using a floating crane at the BOFFA anchorage. While the Second Officer was inspecting the cargo hold, the cargo grab suddenly and unexpectedly released its load, accidentally crushing the Second Officer who was standing near the hatch coaming. The accident caused the Second Officer to suffer dizziness and injuries to his right ribs, back, and leg.

The Second Officer subsequently went to an African hospital for examination. Local doctors indicated that the leg injury was quite severe and carried a risk of amputation.

Crew member injured, at risk of amputation!

After亲眼 seeing African hospital doctors reuse needles on different patients for injections, the injured Second Officer immediately abandoned the idea of receiving inpatient treatment in Africa. He contacted his crewing company, Dalian Zhonghai Maritime, insisting on returning to China for treatment.

Upon learning of the incident, Dalian Zhonghai Maritime, prioritizing the crew member’s health, immediately activated the Liaoning region’s remote medical cooperation mechanism for crew health. They fully cooperated with the medical treatment efforts for the injured crew member.

While the vessel was returning to China from Africa, they simultaneously made remote contact via mobile phone with doctors from Dalian Haigang Hospital. Through the tracking and guidance of a professional medical team, the further deterioration of the injury was effectively prevented.

Currently, the crew member has returned to China and been admitted to the hospital. His condition is stable, with no risk of amputation. Doctors stated that after recovery, there will be no impact on his future life or work.

The Second Officer felt extremely fortunate that this injury was ultimately resolved safely. He also expressed gratitude for the careful attention from the Captain and colleagues, the professional guidance from Dalian Haigang Hospital, and the coordination and cooperation from Dalian Zhonghai Maritime.

This successful rescue of the injured crew member was a successful application of the Liaoning region’s remote medical cooperation mechanism for crew health. This mechanism was jointly established by Dalian Zhonghai Maritime Technology Co., Ltd., Liaoning Maritime Safety Administration, Dalian Maritime Safety Administration, and Dalian Haigang Hospital. It aims to comprehensively enhance crew health protection capabilities and create a model for crew health management.

When ocean-going crew members suffer from illness or injury during voyages, they are far from land and the ship lacks professional medical personnel, equipment, and medicine, creating an urgent need for shore-based remote medical support. Some shipowners have not established cooperation mechanisms with domestic medical institutions or rely on foreign medical institutions. Language barriers can easily lead to delays in the optimal diagnosis and treatment window, affecting the crew’s health.

The responsible person from Dalian Zhonghai Maritime Technology Co., Ltd. stated that the Liaoning region’s remote medical cooperation mechanism for crew health provides free medical treatment for crew members, effectively ensuring their physical and mental well-being and allowing injured crew to receive timely and effective help. They also sincerely thanked the Liaoning Maritime Safety Administration, Dalian Maritime Safety Administration, and Dalian Haigang Hospital for their hard work and full support in this incident.
