LR and Deployable Energy to explore shipboard micro-nuclear reactors

Must read

Lloyd’s Register (LR) reports that it has begun working with Houston-based Deployable Energy to assess the use of micro-nuclear reactors for ship propulsion.

The partnership focuses on Deployable Energy’s Unity Nuclear Battery, a compact, factory-built micro-reactor using low enriched uranium (LEU) fuel. LR Advisory is supporting the project by aligning the technology with international safety standards and regulatory frameworks.

A recent LR-led technical workshop brought together experts in classification, safety assurance and advisory services to review safety cases, licensing requirements and regulatory pathways for nuclear propulsion. Early collaboration aims to address safety and integration challenges from the outset and accelerate the route to commercial deployment.

“We are excited to be working with Lloyd’s Register in the development of future capabilities of nuclear-powered ships,” said Bobby Gallagher, CEO at Deployable Energy.

“Their wealth of experience and desire to continue innovating provide an unmatched foundation as we move toward certifying practical, zero-emission nuclear propulsion for the maritime sector.”

The companies say that they will continue work on safety case development, risk assessments and qualification milestones in preparation for pilot maritime deployments later this decade.
