LR, Seatransport and Deployable Energy developing nuclear power for ships

Must read

Lloyd’s Register (LR) reports that it is working with Queensland-based Seatransport and Houston’s Deployable Energy to develop nuclear power systems for ships, including strategic response vessels designed for remote operations.

The project will use micro modular reactor (MMR) technology to power a 73-metre amphibious vessel, with two to five 1MWe MMRs providing onboard energy.

The ship is intended for emergency response and disaster relief and could operate for up to 10 years without refuelling. The vessel will also be capable of supplying power to shore grids while docked.

“As nuclear technology progresses towards maritime applications, LR is uniquely positioned to help develop these initiatives,” said Claudene Sharp-Patel, LR’s Global Technical Director.

“We bring our extensive history in maritime and nuclear safety, providing a strong foundation for safe, insurable, and scalable nuclear-powered shipping. Our extensive experience with small modular reactors in the defence sector further demonstrates our commitment to safety and innovation.”
