Maersk is withdrawing from the International Chamber of Shipping due to the lobby organization’s limited action on climate endeavors.
Maersk has decided to withdraw from the largest lobby group in shipping because of its limited action on combating climate change, writes Danish media Finans.
For more than ten years, Maersk has been represented in the board of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), which works to ensure carriers’ political interests in the EU and the UN, among other institutions.
According to Maersk, the ICS is lagging behind when it comes to the green transition, as a result of which the group will focus its efforts elsewhere in more forward-looking trade organizations.
”We scrutinize our memberships once a year to ensure that the trade organizations of which we are members lobby in accordance with targets of the Paris Agreement and other crucial issues. Consequently, we assess if their approach and efforts reflect our attitudes and values,” Maersk tells Finans regarding the decision.
ICS has existed for more than 100 years and represents more than 80% of the commercial merchant fleet from its London headquarters, writes Finans.
