Maersk quadruples capacity on intra-Nordic routes

Must read

Global shipping giant Maersk achieves counter-trend breakthrough in the Northern European market. According to the latest report from shipping analysis agency Alphaliner, the Danish shipping company’s capacity and market share on intra-Northern Europe routes have surged to four times their previous levels.

While other container shipping companies generally face growth stagnation, Maersk has overtaken competitors through differentiated strategies. Its regional market share in Northern Europe jumped from 3.7% to 13.5%, with capacity exceeding 40,000 TEUs, climbing five spots in annual rankings to now rank second only to Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC).

Alphaliner notes that Maersk’s explosive growth stems from its “Gemini” alliance formed with Hapag-Lloyd earlier this year. By implementing a “hub-and-spoke” transportation network, 30,000 TEUs of newly added capacity were efficiently deployed in the Northern European feeder market.

Data shows that total capacity on Northern European container routes increased by 17% year-on-year, with 235 operational vessels. In the current competitive landscape, Dubai World’s Unifeeder ranks third with a 12.2% market share.
