A marine pilot died during the early afternoon of Monday July
18th at the port of Yalova, Turkey, after falling from a pilot ladder into the
water. At about 13:00 local time pilot Cafer Kiribrahim was out at the
Ciftlikkoy anchorage area off Yalova, readying to rendezvous with /oil
products tanker Alhena (IMO 9538141).
His pilot boat came alongside the tanker and he transferred over to the pilot
ladder. However, local media reported that, after reaching the ladder, he fell
into the water.
A police response boat recovered him from the water, but
he was unconscious. After being brought to shore he was treated by paramedics
and transferred to Yalova State Hospital, but he could not be revived.
CNN Turkey said that the pilot might have suffered a heart attack while he was on the
ladder, and then fell into the sea.
2012-built, Bahamas-flagged, 30,240 gt Alhena is owned by
Nightingale Seacarriers Ltd care of manager Super-Eco Tankers Management Inc-Lib
of Piraeus, Greece. It is entered with UK Club on behalf of Nightingale
Seacarriers Ltd. As of July 20th it was underway, just north of Yalova.
