MingYang rolls-out latest in fast-growing portfolio of offshore wind turbines

Must read

The nacelle for MingYang Smart Energy’s first MySE 12MW hybrid drive offshore wind turbine rolled off the production line at the company’s manufacturing base in Shanwei, Guangdong province on 1 June 2022

An upgraded version of the Chinese company’s 11-MW platform, the MySE 12MW is designed to withstand typhoons and wind speeds of 78.82 m/s.

The company said the design “is applicable for more than 98% of China’s sea areas, including Fujian and Guangdong provinces, as well as overseas markets such as Europe.”

MingYang Smart Energy said the MySE 12MW “will provide greater generation and better levelised cost of energy for global customers,” compared to earlier models.

As highlighted by OWJ, the company announced in August 2021 that it is also developing a much larger turbine, the 16-MW MySE 16.0-242, and is targeting markets around the world with it.

Designed for high-wind IEC IB including typhoon-class IEC TC operation, the hybrid drive MySE 16.0-242 has a 242-m diameter rotor, 118-m blades, and a massive swept area of 46,000 m2.

The company calculates that with the industry’s largest rotor and highest nominal rating, the MySE 16.0-242 will generate 80,000 MWh of electricity a year, that is, 45% more energy than the MySE 11.0-203.

A prototype of the MySE 16.0-242 – which was recently certified by DNV and China General Certification Centre – is due to be rolled out in 2022, followed by a prototype installation in the first half of 2023 and commercial production in the first half of 2024.
