Molslinjen adds second battery-powered ferry to the fleet

Must read

Turkish shipbuilder Cemre Shipyard has handed over the second battery-powered RoRo passenger ferry to Danish operator Molslinjen.

The delivery of Tyrfing, announced on October 23, rounds off Moslinjen’s order of two zero-emission double-ended 11.6-meter-long ferries placed at the Turkish shipyard in 2022.

The first ferry, Nerthus, was delivered in May 2025. The ferry is equipped with four steerable thrusters, which are driven by electrical permanent magnet motors, and four backup generators, each of 493 ekW fueled by hydrogenated vegetable oil.

According to Moslinjen, during the ferry’s usual operations, only the battery system will supply the required power by complying with the zero-emission concept

Like its sister vessel, Tryfring was designed by Danish maritime consultancy and engineering firm OSK-ShipTech and optimized for a fully electric operation on the Ballen-Kalundborg route.

It also features autonomous functionality BV notations, including auto-crossing and auto-docking operations, allowing for optimized operation and increased energy efficiency.

In addition to battery-powered ferries, the Danish company’s fleet includes an LNG-ready high-speed vehicle-passenger ferry, Express 5, built by Austal Philippines.
