The Mediterranean Shipping Company’s (MSC) Indian branch has broken a local record, by loading a 140-ton transformer onto the MSC Regina in the port of Mundra, India. This is the heaviest breakbulk cargo to travel via containership from India.
The transformer is headed to Zambia for a greenfield power transmission development project. Mundra Port is the largest private port of India. The loading took place at the Adani Mundra Terminal, in a timely manner, keeping the vessel on schedule.
The record broken by this lift was itself also set by MSC. This record, set in 2018, was for the loading of a 115-ton transformer in 2018, at the Port of Nhava Sheva. This lift shows MSC capacity, and also demonstrates that India is catching up to countries such as China or the USA, where 200-ton pieces have already been loaded on container ships.
