MSC confirms vessel fire as crew are airlifted to hospital

Fire broke out on the 8,238 teu MSC Rachele and injured three crew, who have been airlifted to hospital in France, and has rendered the vessel inoperable.

The carrier has confirmed that the vessel was towed to Fos-Sur-Mer after an explosion in the engine room caused by a fire, rocked the vessel, injuring three seafarers.

“We can confirm that incident on 21 June in the engine room of the MSC Rachele (Voyage: IX218R), deployed on our Indus 2 service, while the ship was en route from Naples, Italy to Fos-sur-Mer, France. The vessel has been towed to Fos-sur-Mer, France, where the condition of the ship will be assessed,” the carrier said in a statement.

Thanking the French navy for providing assistance to the vessel, MSC said that preliminary reports suggest that no containers have been lost or damaged and the company said it will keep cargo owners updated on the developments regarding the ship’s movement and the handling of their cargo.

“Protecting our seafarers and ensuring their safety and well-being is our top priority, and we have comprehensive health protection measures and safety protocols across our fleet of ships. We are fully committed to continue striving for safer operations,” added the line.
