The Port of Itaqui received this week the Hafnia Languedoc, the first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered oil tanker to dock at the port. The operation, conducted by Transpetro, represents an advance in the adoption of alternative fuels in navigation and reinforces the port facility’s commitment to sustainability.
Built in 2023, the vessel is modern and dual-fuel, with the capacity to operate on both LNG and traditional fuels. The priority for the use of natural gas guarantees relevant environmental gains: a 20% reduction in CO? emissions, the virtual elimination of sulfur, and an 80% reduction in other pollutants.
“The operation of this vessel is fully aligned with our advances in sustainability and care for the environment,” highlighted Luane Lemos, Environment Manager of the Port of Itaqui, during the docking at berth 106.
The move is in line with the Port of Itaqui’s Decarbonization Plan, which establishes goals and concrete actions to reduce the carbon footprint in port operations. “This vessel symbolizes the ongoing energy transition in navigation and reinforces Itaqui’s strategy of preparing its infrastructure for a low-carbon future, with efficiency and innovation,” said Bruno Mota, Planning Director of the Port of Itaqui.
The docking of the Hafnia Languedoc integrates with global energy transition initiatives and highlights the role of the Port of Itaqui as a facilitator for the adoption of alternative fuels in the maritime sector.
