On the morning of August 22, 2025, a grand naming and delivery ceremony was held at the company’s wharf for the fifth vessel in the series of 3500TEU dual-fuel (LNG+MGO) container ships built by Sanfu Shipbuilding for the American shipowner SEABOARD Marine, named “SEABOARD VIKING”.
The godmother, Mrs. Daisy Cristiana, named this green giant embodying cutting-edge technology. Representatives from the shipowner, DNV classification society, Bank of Jiangsu Taizhou Branch, and Sanfu Shipbuilding attended the naming ceremony to witness this historic moment together.
At the ceremony, Yang Yifeng, Chairman of Sanfu Shipbuilding, expressed gratitude to SEABOARD for its long-standing valuable trust and strong support and announced the signing of a construction contract with the shipowner for the seventh vessel of the same type.
It is understood that the latest seventh vessel, identical to the previous six, was ordered in cooperation between the German shipowner Hartmann Group and SEABOARD. Upon delivery, it will be managed by Hartmann. It is worth mentioning that the first six ships in the series were all ordered in 2021, with a cost of approximately $60 million per ship at that time, while the price for the latest seventh ship has increased by 25% to $75 million.
For reference, Clarksons’ data shows that the current newbuilding price for a 4500TEU container ship is about $60.5 million, a decrease of approximately 1% compared to $61 million during the same period last year.
This series of 3500TEU dual-fuel container ships was designed by the German design company HB HUNTE, adopting a forecastle design. The ships have an overall length of 248.00 meters, a length between perpendiculars of 236.50 meters, a molded breadth of 35.20 meters, a molded depth of 19.2 meters, a design draft of 11.00 meters, a maximum deadweight tonnage of 51,000 tons, and a design speed of 19.5 knots.
The main fuels for this ship are LNG (liquefied natural gas) and MGO (marine gas oil). It utilizes a vertical LNG storage tank, which is the largest vertical gas tank installed on a ship globally to date. The ship can carry over 1,000 refrigerated containers and is equipped with a refrigerated container monitoring system. It is configured with a shaft generator, two MGO-fueled generators, and one LNG-fueled generator to meet power demands under various operating conditions. It employs an integrated rudder and propeller design, with a controllable pitch propeller (CPP) combined with a rudder bulb and S-shaped guide rudder blade, effectively improving propulsion efficiency and maneuvering performance. Its EEDI index meets and exceeds current industry standards, with environmental performance far surpassing that of its peers.
The consecutive additional orders affirm SEABOARD’s recognition of Sanfu Shipbuilding’s full-cycle service capabilities, injecting strong momentum into the shipyard’s future production and further consolidating and deepening the long-term, stable, mutually beneficial, and win-win strategic partnership between the two parties.
Including the latest order, according to Clarksons’ data, Sanfu Shipbuilding currently holds a total orderbook of 64 ships amounting to 1.9062 million deadweight tons. This includes 13 container ships, 13 bulk carriers, 35 multi-purpose vessels, 2 dredgers, and 1 offshore vessel, with delivery schedules extending until 2028.
