NMPA wins greentech global environment award

Must read

By winning the coveted Greentech 24th Global Environment Award 2025 in the Environment Protection category, the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) has once again cemented its place in the history of sustainable greatness.

The award, which recognized businesses with outstanding contributions to environmental sustainability and protection, was given out at the 24th Greentech Environment & Sustainability Summit and Awards, which took place in New Delhi on June 12–13, 2025. With this milestone, NMPA has been recognized by the Greentech Foundation for the eighth time, reinforcing its steadfast dedication to environmentally responsible operations, green infrastructure, and port-led sustainable development. The NMPA Chairman, Dr. A. V. Ramana, praised the Civil Engineering Department’s and Port officers’ and staff’ ongoing efforts, which resulted in this distinction via their commitment and execution of green projects.

The following are a few significant initiatives that helped earn this recognition: 100% Solarization: By installing a 5.3 MW photovoltaic solar power plant, NMPA will run entirely on solar energy. By building three sizable rainwater reservoirs within the port area, rainwater harvesting will ensure water self-sufficiency and replenish more than 500 neighboring village wells.

During FY 2024–2025, 7700 saplings were planted as part of the Green Belt Development, a huge plantation initiative. By installing a 1.2 MLD sewage treatment plant, STP & Zero Discharge will guarantee that treated water is recycled for port operations and gardens. Solid waste management is the process of separating and disposing of plastic and biodegradable garbage in a scientific manner using approved recyclers. Induction of Electric and CNG Vehicles: To lessen air pollution in the port, electric buses (2), electric cars (8), and CNG vehicles (5) are being used. LED Lighting: Energy-efficient LEDs now make up 95% of port lighting.

Mechanized Port Operations – 55% of port functions are now mechanized, reducing energy consumption and emissions. Slop Reception Facility – Facility to safely collect and treat waste oils and bilge water from ships. Shore Power at Berth – Provision of shore power to berthed ships to reduce emissions from onboard generators. Automated Sprinkling Systems – Mechanised and semi-mechanised sprinkling of treated water to control dust pollution across port areas.

Vermi-Compost Unit – Establishment of an in-house vermi-composting facility to convert green waste into organic compost, promoting circular use of natural resources. Moist Cannon Vehicle – Deployment of a moisture cannon vehicle to efficiently control airborne dust particles on berths and during cargo handling. Road Sweeping Vehicles – Operation of mechanized road sweeping vehicles to maintain dust-free roads and wharf areas.

These initiatives align with the broader vision of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to transform Indian ports into green and sustainable hubs. NMPA’s recognition at the Greentech Summit is not only a matter of pride for the Port but also a significant inspiration for stakeholders across the maritime sector to invest in environmentally responsible practices.
