Nornickel and Rosatom sign cooperation agreement

Nornickel, the world’s largest producer ofpalladium and high-grade nickel and amajor producer ofplatinum and copper, announces that ithas entered into acooperation agreement with the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom (Rosatom).

The agreement was signed byVladimir Potanin, Nornickel President, and Alexey Likhachev, Rosatom Director General. The parties agreed tocooperate inseveral areas.

First, the parties intend todeliver strategic projects inthe Russian Arctic inabid todevelop the infrastructure ofthe Northern Sea Route, Arctic shipping, including the implementation ofshipbuilding projects and the development ofthe nuclear icebreaker fleet. Atomflot’s icebreakers help Nornickel expand the transport corridor tothe Taimyr Peninsula, allowing ittosupport its ambitious investment programme inthe Norilsk Industrial District. For example, since 2022, the Sibir nuclear-powered icebreaker has been providing year-round navigation onthe Murmansk-Dudinka line and isoperating inthe Yenisey Bay, ensuring commercial speed ofpiloting.

Joint projects may also include the development ofthe Kolmozerskoye lithium deposit inthe Murmansk region and further deep processing oflithium raw materials. Kolmozerskoye isthe largest (18.9% ofdomestic reserves) and most promising untapped Russian lithium ore deposit and iscurrently unallocated. The parties will consider setting upajoint venture with stakes and parity principles ofcorporate governance. Such JVwould combine the assets and competencies ofthe partners and participate inthe Kolmozerskoye licence auction.

“Nornickel’s products have long played animportant role inenergy storage. Byexpanding our range ofmetals with such animportant and sought-after raw material aslithium, weintend tostrengthen our position asakey supplier tothe battery industry. And cooperation between Rosatom and Nornickel will allow the Russian industry totake astep forward indeveloping its own production ofefficient modern batteries,” said Nornickel President Vladimir Potanin.

Lithium mining will help set upthe first domestic production oflithium-containing products, aswell asthe production oflithium-ion traction batteries. Thus, bycomplementing each other’s capabilities and assets, cooperation between Rosatom and Nornickel will accelerate the construction ofafull-cycle energy storage industry.

Under the cooperation agreement, Rosatom plans toinvolve FSUE Atomflot,ARMZ Uranium Holding, JSC TechSnabExport and JSCRENERA inthe projects.

“The list ofareas isnot exhaustive and may besupplemented bythe parties byconcluding additional agreements,” the document says.

MMCNorilsk Nickel isadiversified mining and metallurgical company, the world’s largest producer ofpalladium and high-grade nickel and amajor producer ofplatinum and copper. The company also produces cobalt, rhodium, silver, gold, iridium, ruthenium, selenium, tellurium, sulphur and other products.
