North Star has become the first vessel operator to achieve Lloyd’s Register’s Cyber Resilience classification under the new International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) standards, mandatory for all newbuilds contracted for construction since July 2024.
The Grampian Kestrel and Grampian Eagle, North Star’s new commissioning service operation vessels (CSOVs), have been certified to meet both UR E26 and UR E27 requirements, covering cyber resilience of ships and onboard systems.
Built at Vard Langsten in Norway to the VARD 4 22 design, the CSOVs mark North Star’s entry into the renewables market, with plans to add 40 service vessels by 2040.
The certification examined the vessels’ capacity to withstand cyberattacks, maintain operations under these threats, and to recover quickly, safeguarding crew, onboard systems, and offshore wind activities.
All mission-critical systems on board were assessed against Lloyd’s Register’s classification criteria, including dynamic positioning systems and Voith Schneider propulsion controls. The vessels also feature Starlink connectivity to support crew welfare and operational communications.
