Norway arrests activists blocking tanker

Must read

Norwegian police arrested 20 Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion activists on Monday April 25th after they prevented a tanker from delivering Russian oil to an Exxon Mobil terminal.

The activists tied their red rubber dinghy to the anchor chain of crude oil tanker Ust Luga (IMO 9740469). Greenpeace said that the vessel was attempting to unload about 95,000 tons of oil.

Greenpeace Norway chief Frode Pleym said that oil was a cause of the climate crisis, wars and conflicts. “I am shocked that Norway is operating as a free port for Russian oil, which we know is financing the warof Putin”, Pleym said.

Norwegian police later said all activists had been removed from the area.

The Hong Kong-registered Ust Luga was anchored outside Esso’s oil terminal in Slagen, about 70 km (43 miles) south of the capital Oslo.

Esso Norway said that it had agreed to buy the oil before the conflict began and had no plans to buy any other products from Russia. It told Reuters that “Esso Norway fully
respects all Norwegian sanctions and we support coordinated international efforts to end Russia’s unprovoked attack,” adding that the cargo from the tanker was used for blending marine gas oil for the shipping industry. 2017-built, Hong Kong-flagged, 63,076 gt Ust Luga is owned by Asia Gold Shipping Ltd care of manager Golden Tanker Holdings Ltd of Hong Kong, China. ISM manager is Anglo-Eastern Shipmanagement of Singapore. It is entered with Swedish Club (Asia team) on behalf of Asia Gold Shipping Ltd
