NYK has announced that it will order two LNG-fuelled 95,000dwt coal carriers from Oshima Shipbuilding.
The newbuildings order is expectedto be delivered in 2025. It formsa part of a bulk carrier fleet renewal aimed at achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the NYK Group’s oceangoing businesses by 2050. The two ships will also be compliant with the IMO’s NOx (nitrogen oxide) emission regulations (Tier III).
NYK is positioning LNG fuel as a bridge solution until future zero-emission ships can be realized. The company ordered the world’s first LNG-fuelled large coal carrier from Oshima Shipbuilding in 2019 and its first LNG-fuelled capesize bulk carrier in 2021, in addition to four more LNG-fuelled capsize bulk carriers in January 2022.
The delivery of NYK’s first 95,000dwt dual-fuel coal carrier is expected to be delivered in March 2023.
Going forward, the company will continue with the gradual planned introduction of LNG-fuelled vessels until it is possible to order zero-emission vessels that use marine fuels such as hydrogen or ammonia.
