A Ukrainian worker has died and four others were injured after the St. Kitts and Nevis–flagged roro vessel Elmes capsized during maintenance at the Yıldız Shipyard in Istanbul’s Tuzla Shipyards Region.

The 101-metre vessel developed a sudden portside list on Thursday at around 14.30 hrs local time while undergoing mechanical repairs.

Several workers were thrown into the water as the ship rolled over, triggering a rapid emergency response from coast guard, fire, and medical teams.

Authorities confirmed that 46-year-old Ukrainian national Vlasyuk Yevgen was killed after becoming trapped under an evacuation ramp hatch. His body was later transferred to the Forensic Medicine Institute for examination. The four injured workers were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The Elmes, a 5,104 dwt unit built in 1997 by Germany’s PS Werften Wolgast, which previously traded as Atlantic Provider, was reportedly in drydock for maintenance when the incident occurred. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
